CD player does not work in a DOS window due to remarked out MSCDEX.EXE file.
Cause:
The MSCDEX.EXE file required to run a CD-ROM in MS-DOS is remarked out of the AUTOEXEC.BAT by the Windows 95 setup program. The file is replaced by a protected-mode CD-ROM driver.
Solution:
Load Mscdex.exe in the Autoexec.bat and load the manufacturer's CD-ROM driver into the Config.sys.
1) Create a back-up copy of the file Autoexec.bat:
a) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
b) Select 'Programs', 'Accessories', and 'Notepad'. (The 'Untitled - Notepad' window appears.)
c) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Open...'. (The 'Open' dialog box appears.)
d) Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
(where '<drive>:' is the letter of the local hard disk).
e) Click 'Open'.
f) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
g) Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\AUTOEXEC.BAK
(where <drive> is the letter of the local disk).
h) Click 'Save'.
2) Type the following in the file Autoexec.bat:
<drive>:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE:
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).
3) Save the file as Autoexec.bat:
a) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
b) Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
(where <drive> is the letter of the drive that the computer uses to boot up).
c) Click 'Save'.
d) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Exit'.
4) Create a back-up copy of the file Config.sys:
a) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
b) Select 'Programs', 'Accessories', and 'Notepad'. (The 'Untitled - Notepad' window appears.)
c) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Open...'. (The 'Open' dialog box appears.)
d) In the 'File name' box, type:
<drive>:\CONFIG.SYS
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).
e) Click 'Open'. (The 'Config.sys - Notepad' window appears.)
f) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
g) Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\CONFIG.BAK
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).
h) Click 'Save'.
5) Type the appropriate application path for the manufacturer-supplied driver in the file Config.sys.
NOTE: Refer to the driver manufacturer's instructions for the appropriate application path.
6) Save the file as Config.sys:
a) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As...'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
b) Type the following in the 'File name' box:
<drive>:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
(where <drive> is the letter of the local hard disk).
c) Click 'Save'.
7) Restart the computer:
a) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
b) Select 'Shut Down...'. (The 'Shut Down Windows' dialog box appears.)
c) Select the 'Restart the computer' radio button and click 'Yes'.
